It’s always been a dream of mine to be recognized in some way by the USPS; now that dream has come true! Way back in January (I guess it wasn’t really that long ago…)Â I was interviewed by USPS Stamps about my mail art activities, what motivates a person to make/send so much mail, and some all around thoughts on the state of the postal system.
The result is this lovely article, which I am hoping mail artists near and far will agree with. As RLD readers know, part of the artistic process of mail art involves the post office and postage stamps, as well as a certain amount of trust that our mail will get from Point A to Point B. “The Postal Moderns” captures this idea perfectly, and I thank USPS Stamps for such a wonderful write up!

Great interview, JH! You are the perfect person for the USPS to interview!
Taking over the world, one letter at a time!
Miss Rose —
You got it, baby! The SF Correspondence Co-op motto is “hand in hand, letter by letter” — truer words never spoken! 🙂

Wonderful article! Keep spreading the word! 😛
This is fantastic, Jennie! I am ecstatic for you, and for the Network at large! Bravo!
Really enjoyed your article and the USPS couldn’t have asked for a better person to spread the mail art word. Congrats!
Such a fantastic article!
Congratulations! I read about you and I grinned so hard I needed Chap Stick at the end. Well dine. We are proud if you!
This article came in my email just a while ago. I was thrilled to see some appreciation of mail art from the USPS! Wonderful article! Congratulations Jenny and thank you!
Annie —
It’s heartening to receive a bit of recognition from the USPS for this thing we do! Getting a nod of recognition from the USPS is like having Christmas presents, fireworks, AND my birthday all rolled up into one great big gigantic gift. 🙂

Great article, Jennie! Congrats!
Yea, Jennie! I’m so excited for you!
You are a pip, Ms. Hinchcliff. I could hear the lilt in your voice as you responded to those questions. It’s almost like you LIKE doing mail art, or something! 😉
Congratulations!! The article is GREAT and you deserve to be recognized in such an honorable way. I’m thrilled for you!
Wow! How exciting!!
wonderful interview! I’ll be linking to this far and wide.
Fab!
Well done! This should lead to more awareness among the stamp collectors who frequent that site.
Fred —
I absolutely hope so! I often try and think up more ways to engage stamp collectors and introduce them into the world of correspondence art; it seems like a bit of cross over would be natural. More often than not, I see mail artists who are interested in stamps/postage, but (and this is my opinion) it’s rare that a philatelist finds themselves participating in mail art exchanges. I’d love to hear your (and everyone’s) thoughts about this, especially since you walk in both worlds!

I just opened my USPS Stamps Issue 61 and there you were. Great! Congrats!-Mike D
Mike —
Wowee! Was this by any chance the “USA Philatelic” magazine that the USPS puts out? Would love to more…
(great to hear from you!)

This is FANTASTIC!!! Your book was the first book i ever read when getting into letter writing and mail art…my twin sister in college used to send me all sort s of WONDERFUL artwork on her envelopes (she started off in graphic art/designing) and has a wonderful quirky sense of humor. I’m going to send her a copy of your book…to see if I can re-inspire her!
Jennie, you sure are a class act. I loved that article – everything coming from a great perspective and your enthusiasm for the genre was made very articulately (as usual) and struck a blow for mail artists (Postal Moderns), everywhere!

Thanks so much for your kind words; I feel the EXACT same way about you! I’m thrilled beyond belief that the USPS wanted to highlight mail art as a “thing”; that’s a big, exciting deal in-and-of itself. As artists who make/send things through the mail and use the USPS as one of our primary “art making tools”, this is an incredible acknowledgement of the kind of art that ALL mail artists create. As CMN mentioned above: next stop — an official USPS postage stamp with a mail art theme! 🙂

Congratulations! What a great opportunity for you. Well deserved1
Finally caught up with your USPS article… Wait – let’s say that again: “YOUR USPS ARTICLE!” So awesome!! Now, the next goal will be to design an actual USPS postage stamp, right? RIGHT??? 🙂
Congratulations!
CMN —
YES! and you better believe that, like The Netherlands, the postage stamp I end up designing will have a decidedly mail art bias! 🙂

Dear Jennie, this is a wonderful interview giving you the recognition you so deserve and inspiring all of us to remember we are part of a big, loving, creative community of like minded people. Gotta go write some letters….love you, Phyllis
Lovely Phyllis —
